Correct Payroll Errors The Requested File Cannot Be Opened And The File Exists

When you update payroll, pay your taxes, or access state or federal documents, you may encounter the following errors:

  • The file you specified cannot be opened, or
  • The file exists

Solution 1. Open with Administrator

  1. Activate the Windows Start button.
  2. Search for “QuickBooks” there.
  3. Your results ought to appear in the Search window.
  4. Select the year and version of QuickBooks by using the right-click menu.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Run the payroll update.
  7. Once complete, close QuickBooks and open it normally (not running as admin).
  8. Continue to Solution 2 if you still notice a mistake.

Solution 2: Windows Permissions Update

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Find your QuickBooks program file.
  4. Right-click the QBW32.EXE file that contains the QuickBooks application and choose Properties.
  5. Choose Security, then click Edit.
  6. Pick Add. Enter “Everyone” in the text box, then click OK.
  7. Select the Full control checkbox in the Security window, after which click OK.
  8. Select Add once more. Enter “Users” in the window, then click OK.
  9. Select the Full control checkbox in the Security window, after which click OK.
  10. When you’re finished, click Apply, and then click OK to save your changes.
